Elle Fanning & Marian Macgowan Talk Continued Success of Hulu Series

As audiences binge the third season of Hulu’s The Great, the fate of Nicholas Hoult’s Peter III is on everyone’s mind — while the show picks up immediately after he survives a stabbing attempt by the hand of his wife Catherine, he can only circumvent his destiny for so long. But as star Elle Fanning tells it during her visit to THR’s Emmys Lounge alongside executive producer Marian Macgowan, the fact that the character even lasted this long is a testament to Hoult’s acting skills. “Now that we’re in season three and married and in love, I don’t know if that would have happened if Nick wasn’t so brilliant at being charming and lovable,” she says. “I think if you had told me [at the beginning] that we would be allowed to takes risks like this, I’d be like, really? But [the show] is so evolved.”

Fanning and Macgowan also discussed how the production decided on some of the season’s more shocking plot twists, how they’ve seen Catherine grow over the past 30 episodes, and what the continued success of the franchise looks like. “I think it’s the realization of what we were trying to do [from the beginning], and that the audience gets it,” said Macgowan. “To me, that is the most satisfying aspect. I mean, a few awards wouldn’t hurt.”
